HR 622. Economic Stimulus/Vote to Allow Consideration of Amendment Designed to Provide Emergency Aid to Farmers.
senate Roll Call 2     Jan 24, 2002
Progressive Position:
Yea
Progressive Result:
Loss

One of several parliamentary maneuvers around a proposed economic stimulus package. Baucus (D-MT) had submitted an amendment to a Democratic economic stimulus package that would have added $2.35 billion in emergency agriculture assistance. Under Senate rules, a point of order can be made against any spending that increases the total for the year beyond what the body had already planned for in the annual Budget Resolution. Nickles (R-OK) raised this point of order against the emergency assistance, and supporters of the aid failed to get the 60 votes needed to overcome the objection. Progressives favored the agricultural assistance as a way to help those who needed it the most, which meant they also favored the motion to waive the point of order. Even so, the motion failed, 57-33, and the amendment to provide the farm aid died.
