Current law forbids women who are based overseas from obtaining an abortion on a military facility. During Senate debate on the 2004 billion defense authorization bill, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) offered an amendment which would have allowed women to obtain abortions on military bases located overseas provided that the abortion was privately funded. Progressives supported Murray's amendment because, in their view, women based overseas should have the right to choose whether or not to have an abortion. The Murray amendment was rejected on a 48-51 vote. |
